The British Association of Dermatologists has recently produced comprehensive guidelines on the efficacy and use of acitretin in dermatology. Etretinate is an ethyl ester prodrug that is converted into the active metabolite acitretin. Acitretin, with concurrent ethanol consumption, can result in transesterification of acitretin to etretinate.
